At first glance, it looks like the silhouette of a great cosmic bird spreading its wings but what you're really seeing is IRAS 16399-0937, a spectacular dust-shrouded galaxy in the midst of a dramatic transformation. Captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, this deep-space marvel reveals not one, but two galactic nuclei twin cores caught in the act of merging.
These two blazing centers, separated by more than 11,000 light-years, are slowly colliding within a massive swirl of interstellar gas and dust, their intense gravitational interaction triggering powerful bursts of energy. One particularly fascinating feature? The galaxy is emitting a megamaser—a rare and extreme version of a maser (the microwave cousin of a laser) that is 100 million times more luminous. It's a glowing beacon of microwave radiation, created when energetic conditions near the galaxy’s core excite molecules in the surrounding clouds.
Hubble’s Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) played a key role in uncovering the hidden structure of this galaxy. Thanks to its high sensitivity and infrared imaging capability, astronomers were able to peer through the thick veils of dust and discover the dual cores inside a view that optical telescopes simply couldn't offer.
