This galaxy was once a normal spiral. Then another galaxy crashed almost straight through its centre and left behind a cosmic ripple. Meet the Cartwheel Galaxy, about 500 million light-years from Earth. Its spectacular rings are the aftermath of a galactic collision that happened hundreds of millions of years ago. When the smaller galaxy passed through, it sent a powerful wave racing outward through gas and dust. As the wave moved, it compressed clouds of material and triggered bursts of new star formation. The enormous outer ring is still expanding today, carrying regions where new stars are being born. And this is where the James Webb Space Telescope adds another layer to the story. By observing the galaxy in infrared, Webb can see through some of the dust and reveal details hidden from earlier observations,  including enormous clouds of dust and areas packed with young stars.  James Webb Reveals Chariklo’s Tiny Rings Are Changing in Opposite Directions Over Just a Few Years Chariklo is a small icy body about 250 km wide orbiting between Saturn and Uranus. Its two narrow rings were discovered in 2013, but they are far too thin and distant to photograph directly—even with JWST. Instead, astronomers study them when the rings pass in front of a distant star and briefly block its light.  Now, JWST observations from October 18, 2022, compared with a decade of earlier stellar-occultation data, reveal something surprising: the inner ring has become significantly more opaque, while the outer ring has become less opaque. The opposing changes suggest that Chariklo’s ring system is more dynamic and complex than previously thought.  Scientists don't yet know whether the changes come from material being added or lost, changes in particle properties, or differences caused by observing the rings at different wavelengths and locations.   📡 Every 21 minutes, something in our galaxy sends out a powerful radio pulse. And it has apparently been doing it for decades. The source is called GPM J1839−10, and it lies thousands of light-years away in the direction of the constellation Scutum. Its radio pulses can last for several minutes before the source falls silent again; then, roughly 21 minutes later, it happens again. Astronomers first noticed it in recent observations. But when they searched through old telescope archives, they found the same strange behaviour dating back to 1988. So what is it? At first, astronomers struggled to explain it. A neutron star seemed possible, but GPM J1839−10 rotates far too slowly for its radio emission to fit comfortably with the usual models. Then came a fascinating new possibility.
