📡 Every 21 minutes, something in our galaxy sends out a powerful radio pulse. And it has apparently been doing it for decades. The source is called GPM J1839−10, and it lies thousands of light-years away in the direction of the constellation Scutum. Its radio pulses can last for several minutes before the source falls silent again; then, roughly 21 minutes later, it happens again. Astronomers first noticed it in recent observations. But when they searched through old telescope archives, they found the same strange behaviour dating back to 1988. So what is it? At first, astronomers struggled to explain it. A neutron star seemed possible, but GPM J1839−10 rotates far too slowly for its radio emission to fit comfortably with the usual models. Then came a fascinating new possibility. Research published in 2026 suggests that GPM J1839−10 may actually be a binary system: a highly magnetised white dwarf orbiting with a small red dwarf star.
