Cows and buffaloes will destroy us?

 If they keep belching methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas. According to an estimate, there are about 15,000 million cows and buffaloes (1.5 billion) worldwide. On average, how much methane does a cow produce per day?

You can easily estimate that cows alone produce 4000 million kilograms of methane gas per day.

Over the past two centuries, Earth has warmed. This is due to the greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. One of the most well-known greenhouse gases is carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a colorless, odorless gas. It is released when fossil fuels are burned. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The carbon in carbon dioxide has been stored underground for millions of years in the form of hydrocarbons.

Methane is the next most abundant greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide. Although carbon dioxide is much more abundant in the atmosphere than methane, methane traps about 30 times more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. This makes methane deadly to the climate.

The beef and dairy cattle industry is one of the main producers of global greenhouse gases. About half of the greenhouse gases emitted by this sector consist of methane. Cows produce methane in two main ways: through their digestion and through their waste.

Cows are part of a group of animals known as ruminants. Ramines have stomachs with four distinct chambers. Sheep, goats and giraffes are also ruminants. An important process in the rumen is called enteric fermentation. This happens when bacteria break down complex carbohydrates into simple sugars. by bacteria

What cows eat has a big impact on how much methane they produce. Digestion of certain types of food produces more methane than digestion of other foods. For example, digesting grass and hay produces more methane than eating corn. Scientists are studying alternatives to cow feed that may produce less methane.
