The Known Universe: 1922 vs Now

 In 1922, humanity’s known universe was often represented as being around 100,000 light-years across, largely associated with the scale of our Milky Way galaxy. At that time, scientists were still debating whether other distant “spiral nebulae” were separate galaxies or part of the Milky Way.

This comparison gives a fascinating visual idea of how dramatically astronomy has expanded our cosmic perspective—from a universe centered around what we could observe within our galactic neighborhood to an immense observable cosmos filled with countless distant galaxies.

The most incredible part is that when we look deep into space, we are also looking back in time. The farther away an object is, the older the light we receive from it. Every distant galaxy can therefore act like a window into the history of the universe. 

Science continues to improve our understanding as new telescopes and missions observe deeper and farther than ever before. What we know today may be only another step in humanity’s ongoing journey to understand the true scale and history of the cosmos.
